Climate and Energy

The climate is changing and so is the community development field. MACDC is committed to supporting our members in their climate work and advocating for state and local policies to combat climate change. To gauge the extent of the work of our members, we will be surveying members on their climate and energy activities in our GOALs Survey.

Centering our work around the frontline communities, MACDC strives to transition to a carbon-free Commonwealth through an equity lens. We strive to achieve electrification of residential buildings without placing an additional energy burden on vulnerable communities, while ensuring they have access to healthy and affordable homes.

Program Goals

We intend to surface – and start generating potential solutions for – the financial, technical, and knowledge barriers that are getting in the way of affordable housing fully participating in an all-electric, carbon free future.

Other goals include:
  • Increase energy efficiency in residential buildings equitably, without increasing energy burden for low- and moderate-income residents.
  • Through a combination of policy reform and adoption of best practices, make progress toward a future where all newly constructed housing is built to Passive House standards, and advocate for resources necessary to achieve deep retrofits for existing homes.
  • Advocate for policies and resources, state and federal, that will enable the State to reach net-zero carbon emissions in 2050, as stated in the Climate Roadmap law.
  • Support MACDC Member Initiatives focused on climate action and energy efficiency.

Decarbonization of Affordable and Subsidized Housing

The DASH project, in partnership with LISC and New Ecology, encompasses MACDC’s work on making the building decarbonization transition technically and economically possible for subsidized affordable housing. We focus on the housing portfolios of CDCs and other privately-owned multifamily affordable housing, while also considering broader efforts to support decarbonization of residential buildings.
